homicides each year the massacre in connecticut has touched a national nerve. it's being called a tipping point. >> i think we could be at a tipping point for two reasons. a tipping point where we might actually get something done. >> reporter: one reason is the brutality of murdering 20 children. another is the near regularity of shooting sprees. >> the public will not accept, the public will not accept as a new normal one of these incidents every month, these mass shootings. >> reporter: the newtown killings have prompted senator dianne feinstein to introduce an updated version of her assault weapons ban. >> it will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but perspectively, and it will ban the same for big clips, drugs, or strips of more than 10 bullets. >> reporter: but the control advocates know they face a formidable foe in those who

>> i couldn't wrap my mind around who would kill all those innocent children. >> reporter: while there are no easy answers, vasquez says the conversation is what's important. >> allowing them to express their confusion and their anger and their hurt. >> reporter: the same emotions that can cause many faithful to question their god. >> our faith is shaken occasionally, but that's why it's so important to have a strong faith and to remain consist out in in our faith in good times so that when difficult times such as these come about, we can fall back and rely on that faith. >> reporter: in san francisco, cbs 5. let's now go live to new town, connecticut where at the present time just finished addressing the memorial service. cbs has more on his comments. >> reporter: anne, good evening. i'm standing here the high school where president obama spoke at a vigil just a little while ago, telling mourners they are not alone in their grief and saying these

tragedies must stop. hundreds of mourners gave first respond ears standing ovation. president obama is there to help this community deal with the tragedy. >> here in newtown, i come to offer the love and prayers of the nation. i am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow. >> reporter: this tight-knit community came together to remember the 20 first graders and six adults gunned down at sandy hook elementary school on friday. >> we ask god to grant those lost a special place in paradise, and we ask their families to be granted the strength to endure the unendurable. >> reporter: as people here in newtown gravy, investigators say they have the best of the best working to gather evidence so they can determine a motive for friday's shooting. >> we have to have the whole picture before we can say hopefully how and c this occurred. that's not going to come very

quickly. >> reporter: police say the gunman, adam lanza, shot his mother in the head as she laid in bed, then drove to the school. investigators say the 20-year- old had hundreds of unused bullets on him and used a high- powered rifle to it shoot all the victims in one hallway and two classrooms. >> to pick on six and seven- year-olds is just -- it's beyond horrific. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news the massacre may have gone on longer but lanza shot himself in the head when he heard police coming. for the families of the victims, one of the hardest parts is yet to come. funeral services begin this weekend. >> the president said he was offering the love of the nation to those grieving. but he also said there has to be change to prevent these tragedies. so how are people reacting to the memorial service? >> reporter: we spoke to some of the people that were in the vigil. they said that they felt very encouraged. they kept saying that we need to come together as a
